Royals, Tom Sox win series openers
Tom Sox Score Late To Down Generals
Charlottesville took the lead with two runs in the seventh and added two insurance runs in the ninth to defeat Waynesboro 7-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-3 series.
The Tom Sox snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh on a run-scoring double by Grayson McCollum (Kennesaw State). Another run scored on a groundout by Tommy Landsnes (Ball State), increasing the lead to 5-3.
McCollum finished 3-for-5 while Landsnes and Brayden Bachman (East Carolina)each drove in two runs.
Cole Draper (Wofford) did not allow a run over the final 1.1 innings to earn the save for the Tom Sox.
For the Generals, Ben Geary (Florence Darlington Tech), Nick April-Gath (Florida Southwestern) and Jonah St. Antoine (Florida Gulf Coast) each had two base hits.
Game 2 of the series will be played on Sunday at Charlottesville.
Royals Roll Past Express
Winchester took an 11-2 lead after two innings and coasted to the win over Strasburg.
The Express opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, but the Royals answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
Winchester took control with seven runs in the second, highlighted by a grand-slam homer from Bodie Pullen (Richmond).
Ian Kaiser (West Chester) was 3-for-4 for the Royals while Troy Davis (East Stroudsburg) and Jaime Padilla (Shenandoah) each added two base hits. Pullen’s four RBIs led the way with JP Williams (Shenandoah) and Zach Fortman (Sewanee) finishing with two RBIs each.
Ryan Bates (Binghamton) pitched six innings for Winchester, allowing two runs on five hits. Bates struck out eight and walked one.
For the Express, Tommy Kirwan (Wofford) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Game 2 of the series will be played on Sunday at Strasburg.
